AP Calculus and Calculus 1 Summer Prep

My calculus professor in college said on the first day of class "if you struggle in this calculus it won't be because of your calculus, it will be because of your algebra."  After a decade plus teaching AP Calculus AB I can tell you that professor was right!  I developed this course to target the algebra and trigonometry skills needed to be successful in AP Calculus AB or college Calculus 1.  I promise you there is nothing else out there that isolates the prerequisite skills necessary to be successful in calculus.  My experience is your benefit.  I know what comes next and what math you need going into calculus.  Prepare for the grind now!

This course is designed for students going into AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, Calculus 1 or a Business Calculus class.  Remember the goal is to get better at algebra and trigonometry.  Its not meant to teach calculus.  The focus needs to be mastering the algebra so if a concept comes up in a unique variation during calculus, the student can adapt what they know to solve the problem.  This is not about a good grade!  This is about LEARNING!!!

Students that complete the course will have a head start in calculus.  Unfortunately most teachers jump right into without any sort of review.  That puts many students behind in calculus before they even start.  The course also helps students get familiar with the complexity of the subject.  Typical high school math classes are structured in a non-thinking format.  In calculus you have to think.  Understanding and applying the algebra is the only acceptable way to do well in calculus.  Memorization will just a thing of the past.

There is no outline for preparing for calculus.  Most summer prep course for calculus just dive into calculus.  The calculus isn't what creates the most problems.  At least not through the first month or so.  Unless somebody is an expert in calculus, its hard to know what to prepare for.  This is what you want to be great at to learn any new Calculus 1 lesson.

A good rule of thumb is 2 to 5 weeks depending on the level of commitment to each lesson.  This prep course is my Unit 0 during the school year and I put aside 3 weeks to complete the unit.  There are 6  lessons, a unit review, and unit quiz.  This might sound short but each lesson is really extensive.  It might take 2-3 hours to complete each lesson, worksheet, and lesson quiz.  Like with anything else, the student will get out of it what they put into it.

The course is meant to be asynchronous but I do offer online tutoring at a discounted summer rate.  Email me and we can arrange a time to meet over Zoom.

Absolutely.  I'm not here to take people's money.  I'm offering this course at a fair price for the time I've put into it.  If you are dissatisfied with any part of the course I will work on fixing it or you'll get a full refund.  Email me with questions.

Yes.  My goal is for every student to have access to the program.  Great math instruction shouldn't just be for those with the means to pay for it.  Contact me for more information.
